NSSSAThe National Social Studies Supervisors Association is proud to honor the memory of Mel Miller with the Mel Miller Outstanding Social Studies Leadership Award. This award shall be given to an NSSSA member (as defined in Article II of the NSSSA Constitution) who best exemplifies the leadership role as described in the NSSSA Position Statement of the Role of the Social Studies Supervisor. The nominee need not hold a supervisory title, but should demonstrate the delineated leadership qualities. The nominee must be a current NSSSA member.
Think of a special mentor or colleague who has exhibited outstanding leadership in the area of social studies education in your state or region. If that person is a member of NSSSA, you can recognize their contributions and accomplishments by nominating them for the Mel Miller Social Studies Leader Award. Each year NSSSA recognizes an outstanding social studies leader with the Mel Miller Social Studies Leader Award, named in memory of Mel Miller, former NSSSA President and longtime board member from Michigan.
The nomination process includes the preparation of 5 copies of a nomination packet (in duotang folders) which include:
* Contact and affiliation information for nominee and nominator.
* Description of the position held by the nominee.
* Description of 250 words or less explaining why the candidate is being nominated.
* Vita on nominee: education, positions held, professional memberships, and activities.
* Support materials (up to 5 pages) which may include letters of support from others (administrators, professional acquaintances, students, parents, etc.), newspaper articles, miscellaneous information which will help us to know the nominee better.
* Nominations will be considered for a two year period.
* Nomination deadline is July 1, 2010
