AFFILIATION STATEMENT

National Social Studies Supervisors Association
of the
National Council for the Social Studies

The National Social Studies Supervisors Association was founded in 1970 as an affiliate of the National Council for the Social Studies. It maintains a continuing liaison with NCSS offices and enjoys the rights, privileges and services such a relationship affords.

Membership in NSSSA is open to members of the NCSS who have supervisory responsibilities for the social studies curriculum and instructional program pre-kindergarten through grade twelve, This includes individuals with such titles as director, department head or chairperson, curriculum coordinator, consultant, supervisor, specialist, or assistant principal. Over the past years, NSSSA has grown in membership to include several hundred persons representing each of our fifty states plus Canada, Mexico, Australia, Gambia, Japan, Zambia, Germany, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela.

NSSSA promotes the common interest of social studies supervisors in instruction, curriculum and materials, research, teacher training and social action. It encourages and assists in the development of social studies instruction. NSSSA extends its services and assistance to supervisors at state and local levels who seek to initiate similar organizations.

Members receive a newsletter and a directory which is revised annually to include the constitution, current addresses of all members and a position statement adopted by the organization. The latter is based on the belief that interaction between teachers and students is the most vital element of an education system. Supervision is justifiable only to the extent that it facilitates this interaction. If supervisory personnel are to be helpful to the classroom teacher, they must be well-qualified and work under optimal conditions on tasks that are clearly defined. Supporting this belief, the position statement cites specific qualifications, duties, responsibilities, and conditions of employment for persons in supervisory positions.

Eligible persons are invited to join NSSSA.
